The No. 5 Utah Red Rocks host in-state rival BYU in gymnastics tonight at 7:00 p.m. MT in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. This is the first meet of the 2018 season for the defending Pac-12 Champion Utah Red Rocks. They are looking to build on a No. 5 finish last season with a team with more experience.
Utah returns 10 letterwinners from the 2017 roster of 12 gymnasts. Six of the returning gymnasts are All-Americans including: MyKayla Skinner, the 2017 NCAA Floor Champion, Kari Lee, MaKenna Merrill-Giles, Tiffani Lewis, and Maddy Stover. Utah Baely Rowe and Sabrina Schwab lost both All-Americans from last year’s team. Rowe graduated and Schwab, the 2016 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, medically retired from the sport. Utah will feature three new freshmen Sydney Soloski and Alexia Burch, who have both been with the team since the summer and participated at the Red Rocks Preview in December, and Lauren Wong, who will join the team on Jan. 11 as a walk-on after graduating early from Skyline High School in Salt Lake City.
Utah is a perfect 44-0 against BYU in Salt Lake City and leads the series 95-2 (with both losses coming in Provo, once out of protest due to scoring), last falling in 1998.
The meet is a “Red Out” and 15,000 red pom-poms will be distributed courtesy of the Deseret First Credit Union as part of the theme for the meet. Wear red and turn out to watch the Red Rocks compete against the Cougars to kick off the 2018 season.
