It’s All-American season, and the Utes have a trio of guys that are pulling in honors from all over the country. All three players should be no surprise to anybody, and two of the three have so many All-America honors from the past couple of seasons it’s absurd. Mitch Wishnowsky, Chase Hansen and Matt Gay added all were named to the AP and FWAA teams on Monday. On Tuesday, Chase added the Sporting News All-America team to his resume, tying him with Gay for three post season All-American teams named to thus far. Mitch, of course, was also named a finalist for the Ray Guy Award.
Per UtahUtes.com, Hansen was Utah’s tackle leader with 114 stops, and leads the Pac-12 plus ranks fifth in the nation in total TFL (22.0). He is tied for fourth nationally in tackles for loss per game (1.7) and tied for fourth in the Pac-12 with 5.0 sacks.
Hansen is the 16th player in program history to earn Sporting News All-America honors.
The FWAA All-America team is the second-longest continuously published team in major college football and added a second team in 2013. Hansen and Gay bring the number of Ute second team selections to four, joining Hunter Dimick (DE, 2016) and Wishnowsky (P, 2017).
Utah has had 19 players make the AP All-America teams since 1929. Gay (2017-18) and Wishnowsky (2016-18) join punter Tom Hackett (2014-15) as the only Utes named to the team more than once.
