Utah vs BYU in recruiting rankings

Hey Block U - my father in law is a Ute, so while I am an ardent supporter of Wazzu, I come in peace with some data about recruiting that I thought you'd enjoy.

A Nebraska fan posted a dataset with 24/7 recruiting data mixed with final AP rankings. I downloaded it and started playing around with it and found an interesting trajectory related to BYU going Independent and Utah joining the Pac-12 when it comes to recruiting rankings.

This view looks at the 4 year avg ranking of all teams from 2008 to 2017. BYU and Utah are highlighted, you can hover over their logos to get a little more detail about each season. In 08 BYU had the edge by a few spots as both the Cougars and Utes were in the 50's for their 4 year average. Right before BYU chose to leave the Mountain West they made a pretty big jump up to 44, however since going independent have seen their 4 year average recruiting drop 17 places to 61, sandwiched between Illinois and Boise State. Utah has taken a different path forward, going from 59th in 2008 to 14 spots better in 2017 with a 4 year average of 45th nationally.

This view looks at the same ranking data, but it is exploring the difference in ranking position since 2008 and where each team finished the season in the final AP rankings. BYU hasn't finished ranked since 2009 and has seen their 4 year average fall off since 2008 at the same rate as Ball State.
