The Utes are coming into the 2018 season with an intact coaching staff, a veteran offensive line, a potent running game and a seasoned QB, a combo we haven’t seen in years at Utah. Expectations are pretty high for the team, and many of those expectations fall on the shoulders of Junior-to-be QB Tyler Huntley. Huntley had a dynamic, although injury plauged first year, but he was dynamic enough to get some attention. One of the national sites that covers college football, Athlon Sports, has put out their rankings of the Pac-12 QBs as of right now. Here’s what that looks like:
- Khalil Tate
- Jake Browning
- Justin Herbert
- Tyler Huntley
- Manny Wilkins
- KJ Costello
- Steven Montez
- Ross Bowers
- JT Daniels
- Devon Modster
- Trey Tinsley
- Jake Lutton
Ok, I’m still baffled by the love for Tate. He’s dynamic, I get it, running the ball, but I haven’t seen him beat teams consistently passing the ball. I just don’t see the Heisman hype and the love he’s getting. I mean, Browning or Herbert should probably be No. 1 on this list, while Tate may be around 6. Huntley being in the top 1⁄3 or 1⁄4 of the league is a nice prospect to consider. I don’t see why he can’t end up in that area when it’s all said and one this season, as long as his decision making improves. He has the tools to get the job done, but he did make plenty of errors this past season. I’d expect him to take a nice leap just with the experience under his belt, and an off season of practicing in the same offense with so many of his key pieces back.
