The junior running back for the Utes has grabbed the attention of some people around the country. Zack Moss has been named to the Doak Walker Award watch list for the nation’s best running back. Frankly, this is the Bryce Love award until someone takes it from him, because he’s so dynamic.
I do think Moss can slide up behind Love as the second best running back in the Pac-12, as long as he stays healthy. He has all the ingredients you need to have a big season, with an experience offensive line and quarterback, plus a nice end to the season last year, which really catapulted him into a good spring. I don’t think he’s Devontae Booker good, who was a legit Heisman type running back, but he’s the next tier down, which is still a very, very good back.
Another thing he has going for him is the depth at the position. With the return of Armond Shyne and Devonte’a Henry-Cole, Moss should be able to stay fresh all season long. He’s an underrated pass catcher too, which I think we’ll see more of as we go forward under Troy Taylor.
It’s nice seeing these Utah guys showing up on this list, even though so many people do. We’ll learn more about what the rest of the league has to say about Utah next week at Pac-12 media day in LA. That’s the unofficial start of football season, and I can’t wait.
