Mitch Wishnowsky named to the Ray Guy award watch list

NCAA Football: Washington at Utah Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Tied for the least shocking announcement regarding Utah football thus far is Mitch Wishnowsky being named to the Ray Guy award watch list. The 2016 winner had a bit of a down season last year, which is obviously why he didn’t win the award for the second consecutive season. Mitch was beat up at times through the year, especially later on in the season, when you could tell things were a bit off with him. With that said, he did have a killer fake punt where he showed some of his great athleticism.

Similar to Matt Gay, the less we see Mitch on the field the better. With this offense being a year more experienced, they should be able to move the chains a lot more and hopefully get more first down conversions. Of course, having a guy like Mitch to flip the field is always a great weapon to fall back on. Now, teams also have to fear his ability to run at any point, so teams shouldn’t be able to cheat as much. It will be interesting to see if he does more traditional punting this year, because it seems people are getting close to some of the rugby style ones.

Regardless, it will be fun to see Mitch win this award again, and hopefully with fewer attempts.
