Giving game balls for the win over Weber State

NCAA Football: Weber State at Utah Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

The Utes are 1-0 after a dominating win over the Weber State Wildcats at Rice-Eccles Stadium, and there are a lot of stand out performances to pick from for game balls this week, but here we go.

Offense: Zack Moss

Moss came out and showed what we all wanted to see, and that was a dominating rushing performance with some monster plays. The only time Weber could stop Moss is when there were 4 or 5 defenders around, or when he wasn’t in the game. Moss picked up 150 yards on just 16 carries, and his performance was highlighted by a breakaway 86 yard run for a touchdown. Once he hit the secondary, he was pulling away from dudes, and there was no shot. He also had some receptions, including one for a touchdown on a 3rd and 8 in the red zone. It’s about as good of a start for Moss as you could have scripted for the 2018 season.

Defense: Marquise Blair

I know someone on the defensive line or Chase Hansen were some obvious picks, but Marquise Blair really jumped out to me. After his knee injury, he appeared fast and really blew some dudes up, including a Weber tight end on a roll out. Blair had three total tackles and two pass break ups, and he was all over the field. I loved watching Blair, and he reminded me of ball hawking, hard hitting safeties that we have come to know and love at Utah.

Special teams: Mitch Wishnowsky

Mitch had a really nice game with three punts for 143 yards, while averaging 47.7 yards per punt, with a long of 58, and downing 2 inside the 20. It’s nice to see him looking healthy. Where he was set apart, however, was with the punt he pulled down and took off with for 11 yards and a 1st down. It wasn’t a designed fake, but either Mitch saw something he could capitalized on or he thought he was about to get blocked, either way he juked a dude and picked up a 1st down that led to a score.

Honorable mention: Britain Covey

Wow, two years away and it’s like he was never gone. Covey had about 100 total yards on both the ground and in the air, and he did it in electrifying fashion. I expect Covey to get more touches as the season goes along, and Coach Whitt said as much after the game went along. He’s a small monster out there, and is must watch.

Those are the guys I give week one’s game balls to, who do you think should have gotten game balls this week?
