Ratings vs Efficiency: Defense anyone?

Did you see that defense? Wow. Just wow. Less than 140 total yards of offense. The weather didn’t do either team any favors, but that defensive showing by Utah was absolutely amazing. Only 3 receptions for positive yardage. I kinda wish the weather was nicer so there would have been more attempts through the air. The secondary has gotten markedly better in each game since the USC debacle. And the efficiency is showing that improvement. Woo hoo!

An interesting note before the numbers. This seems to be to most overrated rankings list I have seen all season, not just by opinion, but by this simple comparison.

The three most overrated aren’t too highly rated anymore, but they still include Arizona State at an efficiency rating of -19 below their actual rating. But they don’t take the cake this time. Wake Forest is top dog in this contest this week at -28. I guess winning against a sub .500 Florida State team gives enough cred to be put back in the top 25. But hey, they do only have 1 loss, so they’ve got that goin for em. And for the third most overrated team we’ve got Texas. Welcome to the club boys! They do have two of the most "impressive" losses in the country, but those wins? Those wins warrant a #15 ranking? LA Tech (who is receiving votes), Rice, OSU, WV and a narrow escape over Kansas. I’m not buying that Kool-aid. Unless there is dramatically improved play for the Longhorns, I expect they will remain in the ranks of the overrated until they lose to Iowa State and Baylor.

For the underrated category, it’s slim. I had to go into the goldilocks zone to find overrated teams this week, so we end up with 4 due to a tie. Those two happen to be in the top 5. Ohio State comes in as one of the most underrated teams thanks to their insanely efficient play in all phases of the game. They are, and have been #1 in efficiency for the past month. The earlier holder of the position was Wisconsin. That will be an interesting game this week. The other top 5 team in the underrated ranks is Oklahoma. Their defense is the only thing keeping them from having a higher efficiency. But with an offense like they’ve got, they can win pretty much any match up, even with a terrible defense. Lucky for them, their D isn’t terrible, it’s just good. Number 2 on the underrated list is Utah. I had a feeling after the game on Saturday that the offense would take a bit of a hit on efficiency (4 turnovers - ouch!), which they did. But the defense had a nice climb, so it offset most of the offensive loss, so they only dropped one spot in the efficiency category. Couple that with a 1 point climb in the polls and it makes for a tighter spread, but due to lack of competition they are still in the most underrated group. Wisconsin got pretty harshly punished for their loss, which is to be understood given who the loss was to. Maybe they redeem themselves this weekend against Ohio State. Maybe.

There are three golden star teams this week. The most in this category as well. Clemson, Georgia and Iowa. Way to go you three!

My comment on this being the most overrated list comes to the fact that there are only 6 teams in the underrated category. The least I’ve seen since I started doing this silly post a couple months back. There are as many double-digit overrated teams as there are total underrated teams. But, in the end, it is the W’s that really matter so a lot of discrepancy is explained away by that little stat. Teams like Washington, Navy, USC, UCF and Missouri are the best examples of what losing will do to you. All of them are in the top 25 in efficiency, but have too many losses at this point of the season to justify a top 25 rating. I expect to see most of them to claw their way back into the top 25 ratings before the season is over.

Looking forward to another awesome game this weekend for Utah. I expect Utah’s defensive efficiency will continue to climb given the level of play of Cal’s offense this year. Hoping Huntley and Moss can get back to their terribly efficient selves again, though that may be a challenge given Cal’s stingy defense (Evan Weaver, Cal linebacker with over 100 tackles already, I’m lookin at you!). Maybe Nick Ford can barrel down the field in front of Huntley again. I think that was my favorite play of the game.

Go Utes!
