With football season just around the corner, it’s time to take a look at where Utah stacks up compared to the rest of the nation. With 130 teams currently competing in Division 1, we’ve ranked each team using an equation that takes into account last season’s game results, returning players, coaching staff consistency, recruiting rankings over the last three seasons, transfers, and more. Each week, we will reveal 10 more teams, then revealing a final top 25 before the season officially starts on Saturday, August 24th.
60. Southern Miss
Conference USA
2018 Record: 11-3
59. Arizona
PAC-12
2018 Record: 5-7
Quarterback Khalil Tate’s shocking drop-off in 2018 resulted in the Wildcats missing a bowl game for just the third time since conference expansion and defused much of the hype surrounding the program after bringing in former Texas A&M head coach, Kevin Sumlin to right the ship in Tucson. If Tate can rebound back to his Heisman-hopeful form, or even find a fraction of his 2017-self, there’s no reason Arizona can’t improve by one or two more wins compared to last season.
58. Wake Forest
Atlantic Coast Conference
2018 Record: 7-6
57. Louisville
Atlantic Coast Conference
2018 Record: 2-10
There are plenty of question marks around the Cardinals program, however with Bobby Petrino once again out of the picture, Louisville has every chance to improve upon their disastrous 2018 season. New head coach Scott Satterfield inherited a roster with plenty of raw talent, but it may take a few weeks to find their footing, especially with a week one meeting against Notre Dame.
56. Boise State
Mountain West
2018 Record: 10-3
55. Colorado
PAC-12
2018 Record: 5-7
Colorado started 2018 with five straight wins before everything came crashing down with seven consecutive losses, resulting in head coach Mike MacIntyre losing his job just two seasons after claiming the team’s first division title and a trip to the Alamo Bowl, Colorado’s first bowl appearance since 2007. Rebuilding in Boulder has been no easy task, and MacIntyre deserves a lot of credit for accomplishing what he did, but the torch has now been passed to Mel Tucker, who inherits a competent offense headlined by senior QB Steven Montez and receiver Laviska Shenault Jr., who may be one of the top pass catchers in the nation. Considering Tucker’s extensive defensive background, stars like inside linebacker Nate Landman and defensive end Mustafa Johnson should flourish in year one of the Tucker era.
54. Purdue
Big 10
2018 Record: 6-7
53. Arkansas
Southeastern Conference
2018 Record: 2-10
The Razorbacks continuously string together impressive recruiting classes that just can’t seem to find success on the field. Linebacker De’Jon Harris returns after making 118 tackles, third most in the SEC last season, but finding a capable QB put points on the board is going to be critical with Fall camp just around the corner.
52. Iowa State
Big 12
2018 Record: 8-5
51. Vanderbilt
Big 10
2018 Record: 5-7
