Here we go! The real season is finally here with Pac-12 play, and the Utes are hoping to make a run for the Roses. Utah travels to Southern California to play USC, where Utah hasn’t won, and stop me if you’ve heard this, in 103 years. As Coach Whitt says, you’re entitled to a bad century. Obviously, the Utes and Trojans didn’t play for many decades, and the Utes have come close to beating USC down there, especially a few seasons ago, that two-point conversion still hurts.
The Utes are rounding into form after some warm up games in the non-conference season, while USC is reeling after a shocking loss to BYU a week ago, plus their AD just “resigned.” There are a lot of distractions around that program right now, which is not unusual over the last 10 or so years, especially since Utah joined the league.
For the Utes, it’s all about confusing that young QB for the Trojans. If they can bring heat with four, and then sit with eight in the backend, they will have a good formula for success. The Trojans are going to get yards, their skill guys are really, really good, but they just can’t give up the giant plays. USC will make mistakes on offense, the defense just needs to be patient.
On offense, it’s also about being patient. That means USC is going to sell out to stop Zack Moss, so if it’s tough sledding for him, the offense needs to be patient and pepper USC from different angles. I think the tight ends could have a major impact in this game, and I’m hoping we see some Jaylen Dixon deep a time or two.
Man, I’m so excited for this game, because the fun can now really get going.
Let’s go!
