The three game winning streak for the Utes is snapped, after they fall to Stanford on the road to 73-66. The Utes were led by Timmy Allen’s 18 points, Alfonso Plummer had 14, Branden Carlson had 12, while Pelle Larrson and Riley Battin each had seven, and Ian Martinez continues his nice play with six. The Utes were still without Rylan Jones with his arm injury, and the news came out the Jantunen has went back to Sweden to play for his national team for a few weeks, and could be back before the LA schools. So the Utes were down two starters.
Early on it didn’t seem like the Utes were going to miss them too much, as they built a 14-4 lead at the 15:27 media timeout, but that came to a screeching halt, as the Utes were shut down basically from that point on. Stanford cut down that lead and overtook the Utes with an 18-4 run to take a 22-17 lead, and the five turnovers by the Utes in that stretch didn’t help. The Cardinal took a 34-22 lead into half, so the Utes scored 14 points in first five minutes, and then eight more in the remaining 15 minutes.
Stanford lead by as much as 16 in the second half, and then Utah started to chip away at that lead late in the game, giving a bit of hope for comeback. Utah got it to a seven point game with about minute left, but some empty possessions, and the inability to stop Stanford consistently doomed the game.
Stanford shot 54% on the game, and Utah couldn’t guard a chair in that second half giving up 62% shooting. Utah shot 42% on the game, and the opening half 31% really put them behind the eight ball. Lastly, the 16 turnovers to just nine assists, this game really needed Jones out there to stabilize the offense and to get guys where they needed to be.
The 11 rebounds is a new career-high for Carlson, his previous high was 10 boards three other times with the latest coming against Washington State on the road (1/21) … Utah had shot 50-percent or better in its previous five games before finishing Saturday night with a .426 clip … this was the first game Utah has had single-digit assists in a game this season … the last time Utah had 16 turnovers it lost to Washington on the road after taking a 44-41 halftime lead … this is the fourth time this season Carlson has led the Utes in rebounds.
The Utes remain on the road next week as it heads to the Pacific Northwest for a pair of games against Oregon State (Feb. 18) and Oregon (Feb. 20). Both games are set to air on Pac-12 Networks.
