Utah Basketball: Brekkott Chapman will transfer away from Runnin' Utes

Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

In some surprising news, to me at least, sophomore forward for the Runnin' Utes Brekkott Chapman will be transferring away from the program. Coach Krystkowiak said in an interview with ESPN 700 that Chapman would like to get back to the Roy area to be with his young family, thus allowing Coach K to release him to a school like Weber State.

Chapman averaged 4.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and one assist per game last season, and appeared to hit a bit of a sophomore slump, but really broke out of it in the latter part of the season. Chapman was poised, in my opinion, to take a major step forward this coming year and could have made a major impact on the lineup.

It's always tough to lose a talented kid, especially if the kid is a local product. With the addition of Tim Coleman earlier in the week, I knew the numbers weren't really adding up for the roster, and this news with Chapman is why.

Next season, the only key returners coming back at Kyle Kuzma and Lorenzo Bonam. Utah lost to graduation this season Jordan Loveridge, Brandon Taylor and Dakari Tucker. Jakob Poeltl announced his decision to go to the NBA, and Isaiah Wright and Chris Reyes also transferred out of the program. So it  will be a very new team for this upcoming season.

We wish the best of luck to Brekkott and hope he finds a good landing spot.
