Utah Football: QB Troy Williams misses spring football practice with injury

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

Utah's quarterback competition is one of the most exciting we've seen for a while, with Brandon Cox, Troy Williams and Tyler Huntley all competing for the right to lead the Utes in 2016. For many, it's presumed that the JC transfer Williams, a former Washington Husky, will win the job. Williams had a great season at Santa Monica last season, and appears to be the true dual threat that coaches and fans have been looking for. Yesterday, however, Williams had to sit out practice with an undisclosed injury. Obviously, it's only spring and it's not a giant deal for him to miss a practice this early on, however, it allows one of these other QBs to make a big impression on the coaches with the increased reps. One QB in-particular has been getting a lot of praise from Coach Whittingham, and may have a better shot to win the job than we all thought.

True freshman quarterback Tyler Huntley was presumed to be taking a red shirt in 2016, while Williams wins the starting job, which is still a large possibility, but his play this spring has been eye opening to the coaches. His talent coming onto campus was never in doubt, but it appears he's picked up the playbook very well, and that his poise behind center has him strongly in consideration for the job. Many reports out of practice has praised his ability to throw the long ball with incredible accuracy, which is the biggest missing factor from Utah's offense. It was just about 2 weeks ago that Huntley was moved to "co-starter" on the depth chart with both Cox and Huntley.

Coach Whitt said after practice that Williams needs to get back on the field as soon as possible, because any missed days for any player, especially a new quarterback, could stall progress from the offense. At this point, my money is still on Williams to be the starter, but this injury, and Huntley's progression, may make this race more interesting than we thought it was going to be.
